JAN MATSON
Jan, originally from Adelaide, began painting seriously while living in Alice Springs in the early 1980’s where she won the Centralian Advocate Art Award.
During that time, various private and public collectors from Australia, United States, United Kingdom and the Ministry of Culture in Beijing bought her paintings.

A Canberra resident since 1986, Jan has been painting in oils for more than 30 years. She is a member of the Canberra Artists’ Society and has studied portraiture and figure painting at the Canberra Institute of the Arts (ANU).

Jan has won major awards in art shows including
2002 First prize oils – Richardson Exhibition
1999 People’s Choice Award – Gunning Annual Art Show
1996 Overall Winner - Thredbo Art Award
1995 1st – Royal Canberra Art Show – Portraiture
1995 1st – Royal Canberra Art Show - Seascape
Jan’s first solo exhibition was in 2000 celebrating her life-long love of colour, hence the exhibition’s name A Love Affair with Colour. In January of the same year Jan combined her artistic talents with a fellow artist in an exhibition entitled From the Bush to the Sea. It focused on an Australiana theme with paintings of the Australian bush as well as local landscapes and coastal views.
Her first trip to England, France and Italy in 2001 was followed 7 months later with A Room with Many Views, an exhibition of oil paintings featuring landscapes, street scenes and architecture.
On a second trip to Italy in 2002 Jan rented a villa in Tuscany and drove throughout Tuscany and Umbria photographing and painting villas on hilltops, vineyards and olive groves as well as shop fronts, cafes and street scenes. The journey was followed by a very successful exhibition in May 2003: A Villa in Tuscany.
Jan returned to France in September 2003 and held another popular exhibition in May 2004 called An Affair with France.

Jan then traveled to Croatia, discovering the delightful Dalmatian Coast. An exhibition, Journey to Croatia and the Adriatic, resulted from this in May 2005.In 2006, Jan exhibited a collection of works entitled Sojourn in Europe. In 2007Jan, as a full-time artist, has turned her attention to the East Coast of Australia. She has captured the enchanting moods of this coast of Australia; the memories of all our summers.  The exhibition, Coastal Moods, proved to be one of Jan's most successful exhibitions. After a wonderful trip to Tuscany and Venice in 2007, Jan prepared for and successfully held a new exhibition in October 2008.

In 2009, Jan moved to Yass NSW, into an old home with an intriguing history. She was inspired by her new country lifestyle to produce a series of paintings of australian landscapes and country cottages.

Her new home has the space for a studio and private gallery. This new gallery space is the venue for her annual solo exhibition - this year being A Country Life.
I will continue to be a private gallery for the viewing of her paintings by appointment.

Jan continues to paint a range of subjects from coastal scenes to country landscapes and cottages.

Jan is still also currently exhibiting paintings at the following galleries:
  • Raglan Gallery & Cultural Centre, 9 - 11 Lambie St, Cooma NSW 2630.
  • Aarwun Gallery  - Fine Art Brokers, Federation Square, Gold Creek ACT
